Improving Glenbrook South ‘knocking on the door’

(Glenview Announcements)  Ever since Glenbrook South posted a win against Niles West on Jan. 6, Titans coach Scott Nemecek has been pleased with his team’s play. Nemecek believes the Titans can get better, and the players are doing their best to make that a reality. “As of late, we are seeing improvement, and we seem to be putting the pieces together,” said Nemecek, whose boys basketball squad entered the week at 5-13 overall and 1-5 in the CSL South. “We are working really hard, and we are knocking on the door. I feel like we are close to turning the corner. The players have a goal of getting a few upsets and winning a regional. We are practicing like it, and we have those expectations.” After losing to Waukegan 62-44 on Friday, the Titans don’t get a break in the schedule, as they’ll face New Trier one week later. The No. 6 Trevians are 17-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play. “They are playing confident, but the pressure is on them,” Nemecek said of … Read more...

The Titans' Amanda Browder took 18th in all-around with a score of 32.3, followed by teammates Samantha Kopley's – who took 21st with a score of 31.15 – and Kaci Castino, who finished 23rd with a 30.6 all-around performance. Lions Show Their Might In 4-0 Win Over GBS

(Journal Online)  The Glenbrook South Titans (11-8-2) knew they were going to be in for a battle Saturday night at West Meadows Ice Arena against the St. Viator Lions (16-5). What they did not know until less than two hours before face off was that it was the Lions' Senior Night and the game would start late as the No. 2 ranked team in the state would be honoring their seniors in front of a large crowd. "I knew it would be hard for them (Glenbrook South) to come into a place like this on senior night without much notice," Lions coach Chris Lappin said. "But I want to thank Jimmy (Titans coach Jim Philbin) and his coaching staff and players for allowing us to do this. He is a first-class guy for letting us do this on short notice." The Lions made sure they would not disappoint their fans as they defeated the Titans, 4-0. "We are getting better and better I'd say," Lappin said. "As of this week, we put together two completely new lines despite being banged up now with David … Read more...

Glenbrook puts up lone goal against Trevs

(Glenview Lantern) You can have all the talent in the world, but having a team that enjoys being with each other is something special. The New Trier Silver girls hockey team features a boisterous group that have fun on and off the ice, especially when they register wins like they did against Glenbrook Girls Hockey, 7-1, Jan. 3 in Winnetka. After the game the Trevians locker room was noisy and full of laughs, which is the standard for the group. "I think locker room time is one of the best parts of hockey because we're all so much fun to be with and we bonded so well this year," sophomore defender Grace Hwang said. Hwang scored the first goal of the game on a rebound, following a shot by freshman Anna Kahler. Elizabeth Hoff scored the second on a breakaway, assisted by Julia Schultheis, and Jackie Kingdom netted another in the last minute of the period to close out the first period at 3-0. Kingdom scored a goal in each period for a hat trick. Carolyn McShea also scored … Read more...

Glenbrook South, Oldshue present another defensive clinic

(Glenview Announcements)  Libertyville guard Alex Haley is all signed up and ready to go. She’s playing next year at Minot State in North Dakota. But on Monday night in Glenview, she met a 6-footer from Glenbrook South who made life uncomfortable for her. That’s where she ran into Titans junior Lindsey Oldshue. Haley scored seven points in the Titans’ 42-30 win at home. The victor on defense on this night was Ms. Oldshue. “Our defense was awesome,” said Glenbrook South coach Steve Weissenstein. Oldshue was quick to credit her teammates. “I had a lot of help on … [Read More...]

GBS Grapplers Finish 5th In CSL

(Journal Online)  Glenbrook South senior J.J. Bamaung had no problem wrestling his opponents at Saturday's Central Suburban League finals, until he went up against Maine South's Mike White. The two went head-to-head for the conference champion title at 195 pounds. Bamaung collected two falls through his bracket to get into the bout with White. Last time the two met, White won by a late third period takedown. The two grapplers were equal in size and strength. Both were patient with their shots, which were few, leading to a defensive battle. "It was hard finding an opening on the kid, … [Read More...]

Salmon earns first-place finish

(Glenview Lantern)  Glenbrook South freshman Jon Salmon earned first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:47.08) and 100 free (48.01) in the Titans' 112-74 victory over Niles West on Jan. 13. Salmon was also part of a pair of victorious GBS relay teams; joining Kevin Benson, Mike Bonetti and Thomas Pollick for a win in the 200 free relay (1:31.04) and teaming with Wyatt Jason, Ryan Hianik and Tommy Cahill to take the 400 free relay (3:23.27). Ryan Brander took both the 50 free (22.33) and 100 fly (55.13) titles, while Thomas Pollick placed first in the 500 free (5:11.52) and second in the 200 free (1:53.21). The 100 back title went to the Titans' Ethan Spalding (1:00.01). Glenbrook South took the top three spots in the diving competition, with Aaron Ach (206.65), Alex Jackman … [Read More...]

Board approves turf field for GBN and GBS

The Board of Education gave preliminary approval for the installation of artificial turf fields at both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South. Turf installation is scheduled to occur at GBS during the summer of 2012. Due to water detention permits, GBN would receive its turf field over the summer of 2013. The district expects the new fields to increase usage from 4 percent to potentially 100 percent of allowable time* and would offer many more student groups the opportunity to utilize the outdoor facilities. The fields would be used for physical education classes, marching band, school and … [Read More...]

10 Questions with Victor Levi

Levi is a senior on the Glenbrook South boys basketball team. He was selected to play with the national Jewish Maccabi team but could not participate because of IHSA regulations.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

I just listen to some music on my phone. I try and get everyone else pumped up by pushing the around and talking loud, stuff like that.

What kind of music are you currently listening to?

Rap, hip-hop, that kind of stuff. Wallay, Tika, Meek Mill and Rick Ross.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

Probably to Istanbul because I have cousins there. I visited there once and I really liked it because its got the beaches and you have every climate you could ever want. It’s just really nice.

What would your dream job be?

I’ve always kind of wanted to be a doctor, like my mom is. I kind of want to follow in her footsteps and do that.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

Definitely music because I’m always listening into the newest stuff. It’s just a fun thing to be around and hear, and be with your friends at parties and listen to music and stuff.

If you could play another sport, what would it be?

I would probable want to play football because you can use some aggression you can’t use in basketball.

What’s one thing not many people know about you?

I love to dance. It’s just a fun thing at parties and homecoming and stuff. Ill always be the guy going all out.

Who is your favorite athlete?

Probably Derrick Rose or Kevin Durant. Durant is just this explosive guy who is a do-it-all guy, you can’t really ever guard him. Same with Derrick Rose, he’s just an explosive player and he’s real fun to watch.

If you walk into Walgreens with a couple of bucks, what are you buying?

Probably some sour skittles and Pringles. You can’t go wrong with sour cream and onion Pringles.

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Basically just trying to figure out how we can find some wins. Talking with the guys and seeing whoever is playing well that night. I just want to help out the team and get a regional championship.
