Glenbrook South Doubles Up Maine East

(Journal Online)  Central Suburban South leader Glenbrook South ran their seasonal record to 20-4 with a 10-5 crossover victory at Maine East on Saturday. The Titans banged out 14 hits behind three GBS hurlers.

The Blue Demons (2-20) fell behind 5-0 after 2 innings, but wild pitches and 2 Titan errors led to an early Maine East rally and the score was suddenly tied, 5-5.

Glenbrook South took control of the game in the fifth when catcher Matt Hoshaw doubled home 2 runs with a booming double to right. The Titans in the sixth added 3 more runs behind doubles by Kyle Pauly, his third hit of the game, Tommy O’Hara and a Maine East error.

O’Hara shut down Maine East in the final 3 innings allowing no runs and 2 hits to preserve the Glenbrook South win.

Glenbrook South advances to CSL semifinals

(Glenview Announcements)  The Glenbrook South boys water polo team put on an offensive display Friday night as it dismissed Maine East 15-6 in the CSL Tournament quarterfinals at Glenbrook North.

Sixth-seeded Maine East got on the board first with a quick goal from Mike Babala, but third-seeded Glenbrook South would battle back and take a 3-2 lead at the end of the frame.

“Maine East came out real tough in the first quarter, maybe we had a little bit of the jitters, but then we really turned on the defense,” Glenbrook South coach David Lieberman said.

The Titans (17-11) scored four goals in the second quarter and opened up a 7-2 lead by the half. Senior Danny Correa and junior Brant Boczek each had a pair in the period. Correa would finish with four goals on the night.

Titans emphasize teamwork, balance

(Glenview Announcements)  As the first half wore on and the Glenbrook South girls lacrosse team piled up goal after goal, the shouts persisted: “Pass the ball. Pass the ball.”

It’s not like the Titans were struggling on offense. They needed just four minutes and 29 seconds to accumulate four goals against Evanston on April 24. By the end of the half, they had 14 goals. Glenbrook South went on to win 21-7.

It was more philosophical — a matter of team philosophy, that is.

“We just really want to move the ball around,” junior midfielder Kelly Ward said. “We want everyone to score. We want everyone to have a chance to score. We just like to play as a unit.”

Self-scrutiny helps Irwin improve

(Glenview Announcements)  When one door shut, Cam Irwin opened another.

After being cut from the hockey team as a freshman at Glenbrook South, Irwin decided to devote all of his attention to lacrosse. Although he played hockey for nearly his entire life, Irwin was ready to move on.

Irwin said it turned out to be the best thing to have happened to him.

“Looking back, yes,” the senior midfielder said. “Obviously, I miss playing hockey, but I was able to focus on lacrosse.”

In his fourth season on varsity, Irwin arguably is one of the best players in the area and he plans to play the sport in college at Tufts in Massachusetts.

Last week, Irwin was instrumental in leading the Titans to two wins. Glenbrook South beat Lake Forest 12-8 on Saturday after earning a 16-4 win over Maine South on April 24. Glenbrook South came into this week with a 5-1 record.

Niles West gets payback against GBS

(CSLInsider) Niles West bounced back from an 11-1 loss to GBS Tuesday to win the Central Suburban League South game Thursday in Glenview.

Kyle Colletta earned the pitching win with a complete-game effort with eight strikeouts and one walk. Niles West banged out eight hits, with Seth Rosenberg (3-for-3, 2 RBIs, double, walk), Colletta (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), Adam Olen (2-for-2, run, walk), Jack Arkus (1-for-4, run) and Matt Delavega (run) leading the attack.

“It was a good win,” Niles West coach Garry Gustafson said. “They took it to us pretty good on Tuesday. It was nice to see us bounce back against one of the top, if not the top, teams in the conference.”

The Wolves (10-5, 5-4 in CSL South) erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the fifth inning. Arkus and Olen singled, advanced on Matt Tan’s sacrifice bunt and then Delavega walked to load the bases. Colletta followed with an RBI single, Pazik had a sacrifice fly and Rosenberg ripped a two-run single.

GBS (16-3, 8-2 in CSL South) scored its first run in the second as Sam Kolom hit a double and scored on Nick Loggarakis’ two-out single. The Titans scored on a double steal with runners on first and third in the third inning.

GBS Battles Back At Loyola

(Journal Online) Most baseball teams would panic after falling behind 5-0, but not Dave Lindley’s Glenbrook South Titans.

Lindley’s calm approach to the game helped keep GBS relaxed after a rough start to come-from-behind and beat Loyola Academy, 9-7, on a windy Friday night in Glenview.

“We talk about playing the game from the neck up a lot,” Lindley said. “I have emphasized it from doing this for over 40 years. If you don’t stay calm you make it an easy day for the other team. In the first inning we made a couple of errors. A walk and a hit by pitch is a lot of free stuff right there. That is part of the game.”

GBS tops GBN in annual soccer battle

(CSLInsider) The Glenbrook South girls soccer team edged Glenbrook North 2-1 Friday in a hard-fought battle Glenview.

GBS had multiple chances, but GBN keeper Jennifer Liberman made numerous saves to keep the score 1-0 at the half. GBN (5-5-3) also had a couple chances, but weren’t able to finish.

Evanston gets job done at plate, in field against GBS

(CSLInsider) After a 12-inning victory Wednesday, the Evanston softball team defeated visiting Glenbrook South Titans 5-2 Thursday in a Central Suburban League South game behind another strong pitching performance from Allie Managlia.

Managlia struck out six and had a shutout through five innings.

The Wildkits scored three runs in the bottom of the third off GBS pitcher Katie Rossman, which ended up being the only runs that they would need. Maddie Reiches started the inning with a double over the right fielder’s head. Allie Managlia put down a perfect bunt to move Reiches to third.

Jessica Garcia then drew a walk after fouling off several foul pitches. After Garcia stole second to put two runners in scoring position, Caroline Duke (2 RBIs, 2 runs) delivered a two-out single to left field to score Reiches and Garcia. Caitlin Boer then doubled to score Duke from first base.

Pauly, GBS enjoy big day against Waukegan

(CSLOnline)  The Glenbrook South baseball team will most likely have a good day when senior right fielder Kyle Pauly feels like he did after Thursday’s Central Suburban League South game against Waukegan.

“I was seeing the ball very well today – it was almost like I was hitting a softball,” he said.

Batting in the No. 2 spot, Pauly gave the Bulldogs – and the right-center fence fits – by going 3-for-4, with a double, triple, four RBIs and two runs scored.

His two-run single in the fifth inning sealed GBS’ 15-5 victory in Glenview.
