Boys Cross Country Update

(Journal Online) Glenbrook South finished fourth out of six teams in the CSL South Championships at Glenbrook North last weekend. New Trier (41 points) won the team title, followed by Maine South (46), Niles West (57) and Glenbrook South (95).

Sophomore David O’Gara earned all-conference honors by finishing in eighth place with a time of 15 minutes, 51 seconds. Sam Stanek (11th, 15:59) also joined him as an all-conference honoree.

Brad Berg (22nd, 16:37), Casey Henrickson (26th, 17:09) and Peter Westerfield (28th, 17:10) also scored for the Titans.

Titans figuring out how to delay end of season

(Glenview Announcements) The Glenbrook South boys will run at Harms Woods like it’s their last race of the season.

Unlike the frontrunners — Loyola, Maine South, Niles North, New Trier — the Titans will go all out at Saturday’s regional in hopes of grabbing one of the seven spots at the following week’s sectional at Niles West.

“We really will have to be on our game,” Glenbrook South coach Kurt Hasenstein said.

Hasenstein isn’t worried about David O’Gara and Sam Stanek, his two top runners. The coach said the Titans need the back end to keep up with the pace.

“Those are the guys who will have to close the gap,” said Hasenstein, who considers his club the sixth-best going into the regional.

At Glenbrook North on Saturday, the Titans took sixth at the CSL Meet with 163 points. New Trier won the team title with 60 points, while Maine South (66) and Niles North (69) were close behind.

“This conference is very tough right now,” New Trier coach Dave Wisner said. “It’s a much deeper conference than even last year.”

O’Gara led Glenbrook South with his 12th-place finish in 15:51.81. Stanek wasn’t far behind, taking 16th in 15:59.30.

“I thought those guys ran extremely well, and I was pleased with their performance,” Hasenstein said. “They beat guys they had not beaten this year.

“They are getting better each week.”

After that, the pack separated.

Brad Berg, who’s been battling injuries this season, was 37th (16:37.75). Casey Henrickson crossed 48th (17:09.17) and Peter Westerfield came in 50th (17:10.06).

“We need Casey and Peter to run their Peoria races,” said Hasenstein, whose Titans were 11th out of 55 teams at the Oct. 1 race. “We still need David and Sam to run up front, but we need the rest of those guys to run as a pack.”

Trouble is, Hasenstein is uncertain sure if Berg will be ready to run this week. The hard-luck athlete sprained his ankle, and the coach is unsure Berg will be available for the rest of the season.

Glenbrook South’s Stanek picking up speed

(Glenview Announcements) Glenbrook South boys cross country coach Kurt Hasenstein always believed Sam Stanek had the potential to be one of the best runners on the team this season.

A couple of weeks ago, he watched the senior post one of the fastest times in program history, as Stanek finished in 15:37 at Detweiller Park in Peoria, site of next month’s State Meet. That put Stanek in a tie for 16th on the Titans’ all-time list.

“I knew he was capable of that,” said Hasenstein, whose squad will compete in Saturday’s CSL Meet at Glenbrook North. “He just wasn’t where he should have been until Peoria. He always had the ability, and he had a great summer. It was a matter of time.”

David O’Gara tied for the 12th-best time in Peoria when he finished in 15:35.

“He continues to lead us,” Hasenstein said. “He has great ability and a lot of leadership for a young man. Any time you have two guys run some of the best times in school history it’s exciting.”

Brad Berg also had a breakout run in Peoria, in preparation for the conference meet. The senior had been dealing with a calf injury and missed some workouts. His time of 15:54 at Detweiller showed he’s almost back in top form.

“He’s starting to come around,” said Hasenstein, whose team placed 11th among 55 teams for its best finish at the invitational since 2003. “I told him to be patient, but it’s hard to do that.”

Sophomore Casey Henrickson and junior Peter Westerfield finished 4-5 in Peoria, and figure to be in the mix at the CSL Meet. Just like Stanek did, both experienced time drops of more than 30 seconds.

Alex Jackman is someone Hasenstein hopes to have at full strength by the start of the state series. The sophomore has struggled with injuries to his knee and lower body throughout the season. Jackman ran in Peoria, and finished in 16:59.

“We will see what the trainers say,” Hasenstein said. “He’s been jogging a bit more, but he has to be patient. He wants to get back in there, but we’ve got to let him heal.”

Cross Country Update

(Journal Online) The Titans got a taste of the state tournament course over the weekend. The boys team placed 11th out of 55 teams at an invite in Peoria on Oct. 1, which is the best finish for the team since 2003. David O’Gara led the Titans placing 44th out of 381 runners in 15:35. He tied the second-best time ever for a GBS sophomore and 12th best time for GBS. Sam Stanek came in next placing 48th in 15:37. His time is the 16th best in GBS history. Brad Berg placed 79th in 15:54.

The girls team placed 19th out of 47 schools. They were led by Danielle DeVito placing 17th out of 319 runners in 17:50. She was followed by Mollie McMahon in 107th (19:30) and Jamie Vear in 115th (19:37).

The boys will be competing next on Oct. 11 at Conant’s Old Spike Invite. The girls will run next at the CSL invite on Oct. 15.

O’Gara Leads GBS into Cross Country Postseason

(Glenview Patch) Glenbrook South coach Kurt Hasenstein knew David O’Gara was a varsity-level runner. He just didn’t realize that the sophomore would turn into the Titans’ No. 1 guy right away.

Only a couple weeks after O’Gara was pulled up from the sophomore level, O’Gara has paced the Titans in their past two meets. He placed seventh overall in a CSL South quad meet with New Trier, Evanston and Waukegan, helping lead Glenbrook South to a 2-1 record.

“Did I think he was going to be our number one? No,” Hasenstein said. “But I thought he was going to be up near the top and he’s really done a great job for us.”

Hasenstein said O’Gara had a very good track season last spring and ran a lot during the summer months leading up to his second high school cross country season.

Yet he’s not the only sophomore that was bumped up to the varsity team. Alex Jackman has settled in as the team’s number-four runner and has provided some depth to a Glenbrook South team seeking to get down state.

The Titans will get a small preview of that when they head down to Peoria this weekend for their first chance to run on the state championship course this season. While seniors Brad Berg and Sam Stanek have seen the course before, it will provide some familiarity to the younger runners, like O’Gara and Jackman.

“As November approaches, you want kids to get on the course so they know it and aren’t intimidated by the layout,” Hasenstein said. “They have an idea of what to expect with the turns and everything else.”

But in order to get there Glenbrook South will have to maneuver its way through one of the state’s toughest postseason paths. The Titans are placed in the same regional as Loyola Academy, New Trier and Niles North with a bevy of other state-ranked teams waiting in the sectional.

“They’re all pretty difficult,” Hasenstein said. “We’re the only regional in the entire state of [Class 3A] with 11 teams, everybody else has either nine or 10 and there are a few with eight.”

Underclassmen make jump to varsity for Glenbrook South

(Glenview Announcements)  Though the boys cross country season is still in its early stages, Kurt Hasenstein has seen enough from his sophomores to warrant promoting them to varsity.

The Glenbrook South coach cant find any reason to keep the underclassmen on the lower levels any longer — especially David O’Gara, who’s won his past two underclass races, including Saturday’s Wauconda Invitational — as well as Alex Jackman, who placed 17th.

“He’s pretty tough,” Hasenstein said of O’Gara, who also won at Crystal Lake South on Sept. 3. “I try to bring kids along slowly, but he deserves the opportunity to be up on varsity. Alex (Jackman), too.”

O’Gara displayed his dedication to the sport in the offseason when he logged the most miles of any in the program.

“David’s become a runner year-round,” the coach said. “He had an excellent track (season) and was ready to go this year. Alex stays in shape, but he’s had some injuries from playing basketball. They both showed potential last year, and David has those intangibles you just can’t teach.”

In fact, Hasenstein almost ran Jackman at regionals last season.

“He was right on the bubble,” Hasenstein said.

Without O’Gara and Jackman in the varsity lineup, the Titans finished 15th among 27 teams at Wauconda. Hasenstein isn’t reading too much into the results.

“I don’t make a big deal out of September meets because we run on such hilly courses,” he said. “They are so tough, and they are different from the ones we run in our league or even the state series. We just try to work on different things, like getting out in good position and running with our pack.”

Sam Stanek and Brad Berg were Glenbrook South’s 1-2 runners at Wauconda. Stanek finished 32nd in 16:50.84, while Berg wasn’t far behind in 38th (16:56.99).

“They’ve been pretty consistent,” Hasenstein said. “They run close together. David’s even been running with them in practice. I was doing some math, and if David would have run, we probably end up seventh or eighth there.”

Hasenstein is looking forward to an upcoming meet at Warren, where the course more closely resembles what the Titans are used to.

“It has a nice long straightaway at the beginning, and we will be able to see how the race develops over the first mile,” he said. “We also want to pack together more.”

Cross Country Team Off and Running

(Glenview Patch)  As cross country season begins, the cooler summer weather isn’t the only thing Glenbrook South coach Kurt Hasenstein is excited about.

The emergence of senior Sam Stanek along with a number of talented sophomores has Hasenstein thinking the Titans could be a player in the CSL South.

“It’s going to be interesting with our younger kids. They are very talented,” Hassenstein said. “I’d like to think that by the end of the year we’d be in the top half of our conference.”

The Titans also return senior leader Brad Berg, who advanced to the sectional meet as an individual last year, and Hasenstein thinks Berg and Stanek will be able to do some damage by working together up front.

In the Titans’ first dual meet of the season against Glenbrook North, Stanek and Berg were paired together for a relay-style four-mile run and won the overall title with a time of just more than 20 minutes.

“Sam really came into his own last year,” Hasenstein said. “He put a lot of miles in this summer and looks awfully good in practice.”

The two are joined on the varsity level by Peter Westerfield, Dan Weathers and Jack Meyers while sophomores David O’Gara and Alex Jackman will eventually get the call up to varsity. O’Gara won the individual sophomore title at the Crystal Lake South Invitational last weekend, finishing the 2.2 mile course in 11:51.

“Both these runners will make a big difference for us when they get moved up to varsity in a few weeks,” Hasenstein said.

While Hasenstein thinks that New Trier and Maine South are head-and-shoulders above the rest of the conference, his Titan squad should have a shot at making some noise in the postseason.

“Our goal is to advance out of regionals to the sectional meet and see where we end up,” Hasenstein said. “It might be a tough route, but we’ll see what we can do as a team and if not as a team, then certainly get Brad and Sam to have a shot individually at making it to state.”

Glenbrook South runners put in mileage for success

(Glenview Announcements) Two Glenbrook South cross country runners will be guiding with their legs instead of their voices this season.

Seniors Brad Berg and Sam Stanek aren’t the most vocal leaders, but head coach Kurt Hasenstein believes the two will set the pace.

“We’re expecting big things from them,” said Hasenstein of his expected captains. “They had a really good summer mileage-wise and they’re both healthy coming into the season.”

Berg, who finished ninth at regionals and was named to the all-conference team last season, kept busy running the 3,200 meters for the track team.

Stanek, who placed 17th at regionals, followed the same game plan and nearly broke the school record in the 800-meter run.

“He’s really starting to gain a lot of confidence to be one of the better runners in the league for sure, if not the area,” Hasenstein said.

For the upcoming campaign, Hasenstein hopes his squad will push for the No. 2 spot in the CSL behind New Trier, but set a goal to place in the top half.

Last season, GBS ended in fifth at the CSL Meet and took sixth at the Lake Forest Regional.

Hasenstein believes some of his younger runners can eventually contribute to the varsity squad, but for now will play the waiting game.

“It’s just going to take a few weeks for them to get seasoned a little bit with varsity competition and just the pace that it goes out the first mile is totally different than the frosh/soph level,” said Hasenstein. “I think they can race with them, but it’s just a little bit of a shock to their system when they go out and it’s a 5-minute mile instead of a 5:20 or 5:30 at a frosh/soph level.”

Hasenstein thinks people will see a completely different lineup by the squad’s Oct. 1 trip to Peoria.

One sophomore has already drawn his coach’s attention. David O’Gara, who finished seventh at the freshman CSL Meet last season, is looking to climb the ranks with the varsity.

“I would actually expect (O’Gara) to be our third runner if I could put them on paper right now based on what he’s done over the summer and what his times were last year during the track season,” Hasenstein said.

Hasenstein believes he will be able to rely on O’Gara after he trained in the offseason with Stanek. The Titans also will be counting on returning senior Luke Brown and juniors Peter Westerfield and Dan Weathers.

Brown wrapped up his 2010 season with a 32nd-place finish at the CSL Meet in 17:41. At the sophomore CSL Meet, Westerfield and Weathers finished 10th (17:17) and 17th (17:38), respectively. They joined the varsity for regionals.

“We’re bringing them along slowly because we do have some younger guys and some of them had knick-knack injuries over the summer,” said Hasenstein. “We just have to be careful with them because our depth isn’t that great. But if they get hurt, then we really put ourselves behind the 8-ball in our league with New Trier and Maine South, which is extremely strong.”

GBS opens up the 2011 season with a dual meet at home against Glenbrook North on Aug. 29.
