Lady Titans Defend Crown Against Hersey

(Journal Online)  The annual Glenbrook South girls water polo tournament marked its 7th year over the weekend.

For seven years, the Titan Classic title game has been dominated by Glenbrook South and Hersey.

The Lady Titans were defending champions, and maintained their crown Saturday with a 6-5 victory.

Titan junior Anne Edwards tied the team-high 2 goals sinking both in the fourth quarter. She scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation.

“The whole team was pretty tired, but when you don’t have a very good goalie and the whole thing is on the line, you put everything aside and go for it,” Edwards said.

The team had foreboding thoughts going into the game because their starting goalie, Eleanor Forgarty, had to leave for a wedding.

So junior Meghan Dragman was dropped in front of the net. She’s never played goalie before.

“I told the girls just guard them like freckles. Do not let them get a shot off,” said Glenbrook South coach Chris Tomsheck.

The girls followed orders to a T.

Their aggressive man-to-man defense severely limited any open looks for the Huskies. GBS out-shot Hersey 26-12.

“They were very hands-on and we didn’t get enough shots,” said Hersey’s Alli Williams.

All the components of a championship game were in play before the girls even got into the water. Both teams were 2-0 in the tourney and both scored 22 total goals each heading into the title game.

Williams started the momentum for the Huskies sinking both of her team-high 2 goals in the first quarter.

But Titan Maggie Dietrich swooped past two defenders with 31 seconds left in the quarter to tie the game at 2.

It was a back and forth battle in the field during the second quarter. Titan Sara Ocytko finally found the net with 2:54 remaining for a 3-2 lead.

But with a minute left before halftime Hersey’s Hannah Johnstone launched a shot from half-court rolling backward off Dragman’s hands into the net tying the game at 3.

Hersey ended the third quarter with a 5-4 lead with a pair of goals from Karolina Szymaszek and Maddie Liesz. Dietrich put one in the net for the Titans off a steal from Jessie Kerndt. Dietrich ended the game with 2 goals.

Kerndt ended with six steals, which accounted for Hersey’s 17 total turnovers, which was part of the difference maker, said Hersey coach Megan Brownley.

“There were a lot of games this week. A lot of them went downtown for this orchesis choir concert and didn’t get home until midnight,” Brownley said. “They looked like they were swimming through pudding.”

Hersey was comfortable in their lead in the fourth and was lucky with two crossbar shots, but Edwards found the net with 4:11 left tying the game at 5.

“I just really thought this was our time,” Kerndt said. “We just wanted to try and win it again because last year was our first time winning and it felt awesome.”

In the seven Titan Classics, Hersey has played Glenbrook South for the crown each year. The Huskies hailed supreme the first five years until 2011.

This year’s victory was even more surprising for Tomsheck because he’s playing with a varsity roster of 11 compared to the usual 20 plus of years past.

The Titans lost last year’s leading scorer Hallie Hengels and Anna Veselovsky who both decided to focus on swimming instead of playing polo this year.

“We are far beyond where I thought we’d be,” Tomsheck said. “We have 11 girls, that’s it. We can’t even scrimmage. So this is what we’re going to do – we’re going to be in the best shape of our lives – sort of out of Hoosiers.”

That best shape entails a rigorous workout regiment encompassing weight lifting and swimming. The team didn’t even start practicing polo until last Monday, Tomsheck sadi.

Glenbrook South (5-1) will play at Vernon Hills Thursday. Hersey (4-7) travels to Buffalo Grove Thursday.

Titans will make due with smaller numbers

(Glenview Announcements)  Glenbrook South returns four players with significant varsity experience from last season, and the Titans will need all of them more than ever.

Juniors Anne Edwards, Jessie Kendt, Maggie Dietrich and Sarah Grieve all will be counted on to make major contributions in the water on Chris Tomsheck’s smallest club in his four seasons at the school.

“They all showed great promise, and all of them have a great knack for the sport,” said Tomsheck, who was surprised when only 11 girls came to tryouts Monday. “But I didn’t realize we’d be losing so many other players. It will be a challenging season, to say the least.”

Kendt arguably is the team’s top player and started a majority of the games as a sophomore. She will play driver and be the team’s 2-meter defender. “She’s not afraid to shoot from everywhere,” said Tomsheck, whose team went 11-14 and finished fifth in the conference last season. The Titans lost to New Trier in the first game of the state playoffs. “As long as she’s in the pool, she thinks she’s open.”

Edwards also shined last season as a sophomore, becoming the first all-sectional honoree in Tomsheck’s time with the program. She also was one of the team’s leading scorers.

“She really turned it on late last year,” the coach said of the driver. “She was our most improved girl, by far. She has a knack to find the ball and has the speed to go get it.”

Dietrich and Grieve also are drivers. Dietrich is one of two left-handers on the team.

Once again, Eleanor Fogarty is back in goal for the Titans. She volunteered for the position as a freshman and ended up starting some games as a rookie.

Glenbrook South opens the season March 13 against Maine West.

Lady Titans Fall In Overtime

(Journal Online) It always seems the Glenbrook South and Deer Park girls water polo teams go into overtime when they play each other.

Saturday’s Central Suburban League conference tournament was no exception, but in fact keeping with tradition. For three years now the teams have gone into overtime at conference.

However, it was Deer Park (a combination team of Deerfield and Highland Park) that made a big comeback with a 6-5 victory in the second overtime period to place 3rd in the CSL.

“They just kept their spirits up. We didn’t let them control how we were feeling, and how we were playing,” said Deer Park coach Christine Pasquesi.

The Titans held a 4-1 halftime lead, but Deer Park held GBS scoreless in the second half. Early in the fourth period Jackie Begley sunk a wide open shot to tie the game at 4.

The Titans scrambled in the last seconds with two back-to-back point blank shots by Maggie Dietrich, but each were blocked by Deer Park defenders and goalie Kaitlyn Gilbert sending the game into overtime.

The Titans put their game faces back on and worked their plays in the first overtime period. With a minute left Michelle Durkin drove the ball in a one-on-one challenge. She drew all defenders toward her, but immediately passed off to Sarah Grieve smashing the shot for the 5-4 lead.

In the second overtime period Begley tied the game again with her whip turn shot with 1:15 left. The final blow came at 32 seconds with Drew Weitman firing from a wide open corner 12 meters out to finalize the 6-5 score.

“I think we just got a little bit too ahead of ourselves because we were up four,” Durkin said. “We needed to slow down and keep scoring.”

The Titans had a comfortable first period with Durkin and Dietrich each scoring for the 2-0 lead. The goals came early in the period, but there were seldom opportunities to score since each team played a tight girl-on-girl defense.

In the second period Anne Edwards caught a long pass from Dietrich putting it in the net within the first minute.

With two minutes to go before halftime Edwards worked a fast break with all Deer Park defenders swimming to catch up. She stopped at five meters in front of Gilbert and fired a direct hit for the 4-0 lead.

“I think the girls just got comfortable with a 4-0 lead and thought they were going to win and didn’t put much effort,” said Glenbrook South coach Chris Tomsheck.

After Edwards’ goal Deer Park immediately called a timeout. From the whistle blow the Titans turned the ball over. Deer Park’s Jessi Gelberg got the ball on a fast break scoring the team’s first goal, leaving at half down 4-1.

A scoreless second half was the decision point going into overtime. The Titans saw only two games go into overtime this season, both of which they won. The first one was a 13-11 win against Maine South, and the second was a 9-6 win over Deer Park.

New Trier won the CSL title in an 11-6 game against Glenbrook North. Deer Park came in 3rd, Glenbrook South 4th, Maine South 5th and Maine West in 6th.

Girls water polo teams begin their sectional tournaments this week. The Titans are seeded 6th at the Glenbrook North sectional. They’ll play New Trier (3rd) on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m.

Lady Titan Update

(Journal Online) Injuries and sicknesses have plagued the Lady Titans, but the team is looking better to compete at this weekend’s conference tournament, according to coach Chris Tomsheck.

Senior Michelle Durkin, the team’s leading scorer, has been out for the last two weeks with pneumonia, but she’s back in action looking to take shots, Tomsheck said.

The Titans held their senior night game against Conant on Apr. 27 in a narrow 6-5 loss.

Although it was a defeat, senior keeper Ashling Meehan had the best game of her career, Tomsheck said. The keeper has been switching off with freshman Eleanor Fogarty, but 3-2 halftime deficit led Tomsheck to keep her in for the entire game. Meehan ended with 11 saves and six goals.

However, starting forward Hallie Hengels ended her season. The junior separated her shoulder three weeks ago. Although it was successfully popped back into place she will not have playing time until next year.

“You can’t take any chances. It’s better to rest and be ready,” Tomsheck said. The Titans are also seeing big contributions from Anna Veselovsky, Anne Edwards and Maggie Dietrich, Tomsheck said.

GBS is seeded 4th in this weekend’s Central Suburban League conference tournament. They’ll be facing 5th seeded Deer Park (a combination of Deerfield and Highland Park) on Friday at Glenbrook South at 4:30 p.m.

3’s A Charm For South Girls

Glenbrook South’s Lady Titans can’t seem to shake the repetition of threes.

For the last three years, each time the Titans faced off against the Deer Park water polo team (a combination of Deerfield and Highland Park) they’ve always ended in overtime.

“I don’t know why, it’s uncanny,” said Glenbrook South coach Chris Tomsheck.

But the Titans maintained composure to win 9-6 last Thursday (two numbers divisible by three).

The game saving goal came from Anna Veselovsky.

The Titans were down by one point with only 18 seconds left in the fourth period. Tomsheck called a timeout and mapped out the play.

Off a picket fence break, Veselovsky immediately swam right, fired the ball seven meters out hitting the upper corner of the net tying the game at six.

In overtime the Titans held Deer Park scoreless while Anne Edwards scored two goals and Hallie Hengels with one to finalize the score.

Reserve goalie Eleanor Fogarty started for the second time ending the game with 11 saves.

Her first start was the previous game last week against Maine South where she made 12 saves.

The Hawk matchup also ended in a Titan overtime 13-11 win with Veselovsky coming through on the last minute tie.

GBS Gets Revenge On Hersey

(Journal Online) After six years the Lady Titans finally found themselves as the overall champ of the 6th Annual Titan Classic water polo tournament held last weekend at Glenbrook South.

Hersey hailed supreme in winning the title the past two years with the Titans finishing as runners up.

Both schools found themselves in the championship game again on Saturday with Glenbrook South winning this time, 7-4.

“We knew Hersey was a power,” said Glenbrook South coach Chris Tomsheck. “But we knew what we were capable of doing.”

Both teams moved through their bracket mowing down Palatine and Elk Grove.

The Titans beat the Pirates 14-8 and the Grens 16-8, while the Huskies won 12-6 and 10-6 respectively.

In the champion game senior Titan Michelle Durkin scored the first goal that set off a solid run of scoring. The Titans were up 5-0 at halftime.

The team utilized an aggressive defense the Huskies were not expecting.

Jessie Kemdt maintained Titan possession with 20 steals in the game. When the defense failed Ashley Meehan kept the net clear with six saves.

However, the Huskies were down key starter and past all-conference and swimming state qualifier Christine Rovani.

The senior started her spring break early traveling with the school’s Orchesis and band members to Disney World.

The Huskies started putting their strategy together in the third quarter with Maura Kelly scoring the team’s first goal. She ended tying the game high of 3 points with Durkin.

“We had a lot of poor passes and missed a lot of opportunities in the first half,” said Hersey coach Megan Brownley.

Despite the lackluster start the Huskies saw big contributions off the bench from Karoline Szysamaski with one goal in the game and Maddie Liesz ending the tourney with four steals.

The Titans faced off against Mundelein on Monday and will host Lake Forest on Wednesday at 5 p.m. before heading into spring break.

“They’ll be good games to test where we’re at,” Tomsheck said.

The Huskies are on a much-needed spring break. They played seven games after the Titan Classic. The Huskies host Buffalo Grove Mar. 29 at 4:30 p.m.

Changes Designed to Make Glenbrook South Better

(Pioneer Press) Glenbrook South has joined the club.

At least, some Titans have.

For the first time, Glenbrook South (1-3, 1-0 CSL) welcomes back players who played club water polo in the offseason, following the lead of other teams in the Central Suburban League.

“The one nice thing about this year from last is that we had several girls play club water polo and they haven’t done that in the past,” said head coach Chris Tomsheck. “I had six girls playing club polo this summer and that was really nice.”

Tomsheck also is glad he can look to veterans Hallie Hengels and Michelle Durkin to provide guidance.

“They are definitely running the team while they’re in there,” Tomsheck said. “They are great motivators and great examples as far as their previous experiences in swimming and now in polo.”

Hengels, who is in her second year with the varsity, had her first day of practice Monday after participating at a senior nationals swim meet. Durkin has been with the team for its first four games and is like a second coach, Tomsheck said.

“(Durkin) gets the girls going and motivated and she’s a good team leader in the water,” said Tomsheck.

The Titans will need their underclassmen to contribute in order for the team to succeed.

“Michelle needs to keep going strong and we’re looking for Anna Veselovsky to really step up,” Tomsheck said. “We have a very young team. I’ve started four sophomores in the past four games so far and we have some girls that have some big shoes to fill.”

Tomsheck, now in his third season with the Titans, shook up his team’s schedule to better prepare the squad for the rigors of the CSL.

“We didn’t have a lot of games and we didn’t play a lot of tough competition and ever since I’ve got in, I’d just make sure we would make a harder schedule so that we can try to show improvement,” he said. “If not, just play against better competition so that you have time to get better every season.”

GBS opened with a 16-7 victory over Maine West Thursday , then struggled at the New Trier tournament over the weekend. The Titans fell to No. 13 Evanston 11-4, to No. 23 St. Viator 12-6 and to Wheeling 11-5.

GBS was scheduled to face CSL foes Maine East Tuesday and New Trier Thursday , before its much anticipated home tournament.

“They’re motivated, they definitely don’t like to lose. Every game, they thought they could be in it and they’ve realized what their mistakes are and are working towards correcting them,” Tomsheck said. “We have our tournament this weekend, which we’ve never won and this is the sixth year that we’ve held it, and we’re hoping that we can finally bring home a victory.”
