Cohen’s contributions to South sports held in high regard

(Oracle)  For senior Max Cohen, he feels that playing three varsity sports is routine. In the fall, Cohen led the Titans as the starting quarterback on the football field;  in the winter, he comes off the bench as a role player on South’s basketball team. And when spring comes along, Cohen mans the outfield on South’s baseball team.

As rare as a three sport athlete can be, Cohen feels that it is natural, and couldn’t see giving up any of the sports he plays.

“I didn’t think much of [playing three sports], and I didn’t think it was a huge accomplishment because I was just continuing to play the sports that I love,” Cohen said.

Devito makes college commitment – GBS cross country, track runner signs letter of intent to Bradley University

(Glenview Lantern)  During her junior year, Glenbrook South runner Danielle Devito was told to begin her college search.

Juggling both cross country and track, on top of her academic responsibilities, she found herself in somewhat of a crunch for time.

In the end, it led to Devito getting a bit of a late start.

She ultimately did get around to making some necessary college visits but, the way it wound up, she never needed much time at all.

“I looked at other schools but when it came down to it, I just kind of knew right away that Bradley was the school that I wanted to go to,” Devito said. “We do a meet in Peoria, and I just love the area. So when I went to go visit, I just fell in love with the campus. I just knew right away, this is where I want to go.”

Devito will run both cross country and track at Bradley, where she expects to compete as a freshman.

She received partial scholarships for both athletics and academics with her commitment and will major in marketing during her career at Bradley.

Now a senior, the Titans’ runner has made great strides since being named to the All-Conference team as a freshman at Glenbrook South.

Devito qualified for state in the 3200 meter run as a junior and finished 27th at the state cross country meet this past fall.

Her coach for both sports, Fred Kocian, said he has seen Devito develop immensely throughout the four years he has had the opportunity to coach her.

“In the last year and a half, she has just taken huge strides,” Kocian said. “She has gone from an All-Conference runner to now, she’s knocking on the door to being an All-State runner.”

Devito will join elite company when she does lace-up for the Braves.

Only Emily Anderson, a 2006 GBS graduate, has received a Div. I scholarship during Kocian’s 19 years with the school. The former Titans’ runner went on to William and Mary, where she was named a collegiate All-American and ran in the Olympic trials.

While there’s no telling if Devito will be able to reach the same level of success, Kocian said Devito has many of the necessary attributes needed for success at the next level.

“She’s been very coachable,” he said. “Some athletes, they want to do it their way. But she has been able to listen to reason and through experience, find out that what I’ve been telling her, works.

“Every time she’s reached a certain level, I always bring my expectations to the next level. And she’s responded. And that’s why I know she’s going to keep improving.”

Before Devito heads south to earn her degree, she does has some work left to do at GBS. She’ll continue competing in track this spring, where she hopes to qualify for state once again.

And when it’s all said and done, Devito said she’ll always be able to look back at her high school career with a smile on her face.

“Its been a good experience,” she said. “I really love the team aspect and like competing against different people. It was definitely a good time for the four years I was at GBS.”
